LaNA recognized by UNESCO

IEA’s LaNA (Literacy and Numeracy Assessment) is now recognized by UNESCO as an official source for SDG (Sustainable Development Goal) Indicator 4.1.1b, which is a measure of the proportion of children at the end of primary school achieving at least a minimum proficiency level in reading and mathematics.

Data for Egypt, Nigeria, Palestine, and Pakistan, from a special administration of LaNA in 2023, can now be found in the UIS Data Browser. UIS is the official statistical agency of UNESCO and the custodian agency for SDG 4 on Education.

LaNA is an international assessment that measures emerging reading and mathematics skills at the end of primary school. It is rooted in the mathematics and reading frameworks of IEA’s international large-scale educational assessments, TIMSS and PIRLS, and statistically linked to both. LaNA reports the percentages of students reaching established international benchmarks and collects contextual information about learning environments and resources. Designed as a flexible, high-impact, and cost-efficient assessment, LaNA supports countries in reporting on SDG Indicator 4.1.1b while building sustainable assessment capacity and generating data to improve student learning outcomes.
